Camping in the Smoky Mountains
There
are ten campgrounds spread throughout the Great Smoky Mountain
National Park. They are as varied as the diverse ecosystems of the
park. None of the Park campgrounds offer electrical hookups or
showers, but all campgrounds provide cold running water and flush
toilets. With this in mind, those who enjoy tent camping and those
who prefer a more rustic experience will find just what they are
looking for. The range in campground size is enormous, from the
massive Elkmont to the tiny Big Creek. Likewise, campers who like
the high country can enjoy Balsam Mountain at 5,000 feet or Abrams
Creek, which hovers around 1,000 feet. Campers can walk from their
tent and go fishing in Abrams Creek. Hiking trails abound in the
area and, even when full, solitude still exists. The hot, summer
days provide the perfect opportunity for campers to go tubing or
swimming in the long, lazy pools of Abrams Creek. Cades Cove, one
of the most popular campgrounds, is a year-round family
campground, which offers shady sites and the 11-mile Cades Cove
Loop Road, perfect for bicycles or cars. Elkmont is the largest
campground in the park, spread along the banks of the Little River
beneath tall woods. It is favored by tent campers but attracts
campers of all kinds. Visitors enjoy hiking, fishing and relaxing
here, and it is the nearest campground to the tourist town of
Gatlinburg, for those who prefer more action packed vacations. The
park has seven areas where groups may camp and Backcountry Camping
is also available by permit. Also, many campgrounds are available
outside of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park yet near enough
to enjoy the natural beauty for those that enjoy a less primitive
camping experience. The following is a listing of each Smokies
campground with information from location to camping fees.
