Townsend Arts & Crafts
The Smoky Mountains are well known for the Arts & Crafts made
by the locals, and Townsend is no exception. Each year, several
fantastic Arts & Crafts fairs are held to celebrate the mountain
heritage and talents of East Tennesseeans with everything from
stained glass to woodcarvings and handmade quilts. During these
events, artisans are featured in Appalachian arts and crafts
demonstrations and storytellers bring the history of the mountains
to life with their colorful narratives. The Nawger Nob Arts &
Crafts show will be held September 27-28, 2003, and visitors will
be treated to an incredible variety of crafts with booths beneath
a canopy of trees. Townsend also hosts a Quilt Show in the Smokies
June 14, 2003 at the Townsend Visitors Center.
For year round displays of local Arts & Crafts, artists also
produce fine art with galleries from Lee Roberson, Larry Burton
and Fred Weiser. If handmade crafts are more your style, visit
Smoky Mountain Crafts, the home of Cades Cove Ceramic Building
Series where youll find all kinds of memorabilia, crafts and
collectibles celebrating the heritage of the Great Smoky Mountains
and Cades Cove. Smoky Mountain Woodcarvers offer mountain crafts,
woodcarvings, woodcarving supplies and carving classes. Visit
Wood-N-Strings Appalachian Instruments for some of that good ol
Mountain Music and learn how dulcimers are made. The Dogwood Mall
displays beautiful local crafts in their booth style store with
any kind of craft item you can imagine. Apple Valley Farms offers
a country store atmosphere with a variety of everything from
quilts and afghans to collector's knives, honey and molasses from
all over the Southeast. Have a slice of homebaked pie, and wash it
down with cider, soda or gourmet coffee. Known as the "Peaceful
Side of the Smokies," Townsend takes only one visit to keep you
coming back time after time, and anyone that enjoys Arts & Crafts
will not be disappointed in what Townsend has to offer.
