Flowing through Townsend, the Little River provides an incredible environment for fishermen of all ages and skill levels. If you enjoy trout fishing, whether rainbow, brown or brook, Townsend is the place for you. The headwaters in the National Park offer excellent trout water, and Abrams Creek is only 20 minutes from Townsend in Cades Cove. The Park covers 500,000 acres with peaks over 6,000 feet, and the streams from these mountains provide 750 miles of fishable trout streams. Stocking ceased in the 1970's in the Park so you will not be fishing for hatchery trout. Hiking trails afford access to many smaller streams for anglers who prefer solitude. Fly fishing is also very popular in this area, and lessons are offered at Little River Outfitters Fly Fishing School where you’ll see anglers practicing their techniques in preparation for spending a little quiet time knee deep in the cool waters of the Little River. Persons possessing a valid Tennessee or North Carolina state fishing license may fish all open Park waters. Supplemental state trout licenses are not required, and Tennessee licenses may be purchased at Little River Outfitters.
